FREE Kidscape 'ZAP in Schools' Programme

Posted: Wed, 23 Jan 2019 13:14

Kidscape are the UK's longest running anti-bullying charity. They are offering schools the opportunity to take part in a free 'ZAP in Schools' programme, supporting children from a young age to recognise bullying behaviour, and have the skills to deal with it. For many years they have delivered their ZAP programme to children and families in the community and now want to reach many more children through their new ZAP in Schools programme.

This is delivered through a school assembly and 2 hour workshops aimed at children in years 5 and 6. Children who participate in the programme will:

  • Understand what bullying behaviour is (including the difference between teasing, friendship fall-outs and bullying),
  • Have a range of Kidscape ZAP tools to deal with bullying behaviour (e.g. understanding assertive behaviour, the power of voice and posture, fogging)
  • Know who to ask for help if they or others are being bullied

If you would like to find out more please see the attached document and contact Julie.smith@kidscape.org.uk

'Everyone's Welcome' - an exciting new project available for Leicestershire Primary Schools.

'Everyone's Welcome' - an exciting new project available for Leicestershire Primary Schools.

Posted: Wed, 05 Dec 2018 15:09

'Everyone's Welcome' is a whole school approach that teaches children about equality and diversity, in line with British Values, Ofsted guidelines and the Equality Act (2010). Everyone's Welcome uses storybooks, lesson plans and assemblies to create and support the development of a whole school community that embraces and celebrates all forms of difference.

Following the success of our pilot last year, we are really excited to be in a position to be able to roll out our 'Everyone's Welcome' project to a wider number of schools this year.

Please read our leaflet for more information about the project, and complete and return the flyer and booking form for the initial training on March 13th. This training will be part of a wider implementation package we will be offering to schools (including all 35 storybooks, the manual, full day training, network meetings with other schools, and support across the year).

There are limited places available so I would recommend completing the booking form and returning ASAP.

Trans Inclusion Toolkit for Schools

Posted: Wed, 28 Feb 2018 09:58

A new Trans Inclusion Toolkit has been launched for schools and colleges in Leicester and Leicestershire.

The toolkit provides information and guidance on how to more effectively support transgender and gender questioning pupils and students and prevent transphobia.

It has been developed by Leicestershire County Council, Leicester City Council and the Transgender Centre of Excellence, alongside other local authorities and partner agencies.

Councillor Ivan Ould, lead member for children and families at the County Council said: "We know this is an area where schools have asked for support and this will enable our schools to embed the good work they are doing and develop their approach to trans inclusion and support.

"We want all children and young people in our schools to feel safe and be happy."

Deputy city mayor Councillor Sarah Russell, who leads on education in Leicester, said: "It's important that we support schools to be inclusive, open environments where young people can talk about any issue that affects them. Our teachers already do a fantastic job of creating just those conditions.

"This toolkit will help to further equip our teachers so that they can support young people to have open and constructive conversations about gender identity."

Trans young people who receive support from the Young Transgender Centre of Excellence at the Leicester LGBT Centre have been integral in creating this toolkit.

This toolkit should be used as part of a whole school approach, including staff and governor training and involvement of the wider school community.
